1. Meconium. Yuck. Babies get this gross, tar-like poop for a few days to about a week after they are born. I had never heard of this before.
2. Baby girls have PERIODS! Sort of... It's common for baby girls to bleed a little bit - like a 'mini-period' - in the first few days after they are born, in response to the mother's hormones, or something like that. It's a good thing I knew about this one in advance, or that blood in the diaper probably would have panicked me.
3. Pooping on the table. During labour. It happens. Eww.
4. Post-partum bleeding... I had no idea it would go on for so long! And be so gross! Luckily I was no stranger to heavy periods, and I was ready with the Depends. A little embarrassing, maybe, but much more relaxing to know everything is 'contained'.
